The map's success led to a worldwide expansion in 2024, and soon, locker-like boxes filled with small treasures began appearing in Eugene and Springfield. Sunny Van Ausdall, assistant manager of Sparrow Nest Coffee in downtown Eugene, witnessed the positive impact of these trinket trading boxes firsthand. She believes they bring back a sense of childhood wonder and joy.
"I think it brings back a childhood feel," Van Ausdall said. "I think that a lot of people crave a reason to have toys again, and I think that this gives them a reason."
A Simple Rule
Most of these trading boxes operate under a basic "take one, leave one" rule, ensuring a continuous cycle of exchange. Some boxes have additional guidelines, such as not leaving trash and ensuring the contents are child-appropriate. This simple rule fosters a sense of community and encourages people to contribute to a shared experience.
A Growing Community
The Sidewalk Joy map now boasts an impressive 1,596 trinket and toy trading boxes worldwide, with eight in the Eugene-Springfield area. The map allows participants to explore a diverse range of exchanges and even register their own boxes for inclusion. Van Ausdall shared her positive experience with the process:
"It only took a couple of days to get our box approved and on the map."
